SHAH OF SHAHS by Ryszard Kapuscinski

January 20, 2017 by Craig DiLouie Leave a Comment

shahRyszard Kapuscinski was a legendary Polish journalist who chronicled various wars, coups and revolutions that rocked Latin America and Africa during the ’60s and ’70s. His books transcend traditional journalism into the realm of literature, resulting in him being labeled a “mythographer,” able to capture the zeitgeist of great change.

Years ago, I enjoyed reading THE EMPEROR, in which Kapuscinski talked to former palace officials after the tall of the Emperor Haile Selassie I of Ethiopia, that country’s last ruler in a dynasty going back 3,000 years–legend has it to King Solomon. These conversations reconstructed life under the Emperor, particularly in the palace. In my view, it provided a remarkable look inside a bloated, decaying and capricious regime incompatible with the modern world.

More recently, I read SHAH OF SHAHS, in which Kapuscinski chronicles the brutality and fall of the Shah of Iran. The result is a compelling document of ordinary Iranians talking about life under the Shah and the hopes of the revolution that toppled him.

Kapuscinski’s books are long on zeitgeist and short on breadth and facts, providing a deep, emotional and literary take on history, and often cutting to the bone about the primary movers in great world events. SHAH OF SHAHS is a fascinating study of tyranny and revolution through the lens of Iranian culture.

Check out Kapuscinski’s work if you’re interested in a different way of looking a history.

BATTLE STATIONS Now Available in Audiobook

January 13, 2017 by Craig DiLouie 2 Comments

battle-stationsBATTLE STATIONS, the third episode in the popular CRASH DIVE WW2 submarine adventure series, is now available in audiobook!

Fresh from PXO School, Lt. Charlie Harrison is offered a posting on Sandtiger under Captain Gilbert Moreau, a legendary fighting captain in the submarines. Sandtiger’s mission is to join a wolf pack that will penetrate the heart of the Japanese Empire. Along the way, Moreau teaches Charlie how to fight. And what lines should never be crossed.

The audiobook is narrated by the great RC Bray, whose other credits include THE MARTIAN, YESTERDAY’S GONE and SUFFER THE CHILDREN. In my view he’s truly the best in the business, bringing this action-packed war story to life.

The paperback will be out soon. Until then, I hope you enjoy the eBook, available for the Amazon Kindle, and audiobook.

Check it out here.

What Really Happened on Easter Island?

December 26, 2016 by Craig DiLouie Leave a Comment

easterislandAbout 800 years ago, Polynesians settled Easter Island, a heavily forested 63-square-mild island in the Pacific. They slashed and burned to make room for farming and multiplied. Within a few generations, the trees were gone, and by the times Europeans arrived, the Easter Islanders were reduced to warring, cannibalistic clans using few dilapidated canoes. This theory was heavily promoted in Jared Diamond’s book COLLAPSE. Diamond’s lesson: Take care of the environment or perish.

In THE STATUES THAT WALKED, anthropologists Terry Hunt and Carl Lipo pose a different theory. They pose that the Polynesians brought rats that fed on tree roots. The rats multiplied exponentially and destroyed the trees along with other species sustained by the ecosystem. To survive, the islanders scattered small stones on the poor soil, over which sea breezes that activated minerals in the soil, and grew vegetables. They also ate the rats.

In the end, rather than a failure, Hunt and Lipo call Easter Island a success for humanity. Resilient humans adapted and survived despite a declining ecosystem.

The conflicting theories have naturally entered the climate change debate. Some believe climate change will alter the environment that humans may not survive. Others believe humans will adapt. Which is true would depend on the extent of climate change. Either way, a die-off would occur and while it may not result in the end of the world for humans, it appears likely to end the world as we know it.

Sadly no, but close!

A worker at the Hadera power plant in Israel found a strange artifact in the sea. The object turned out to be a medieval hand grenade.

The grenade was filled with Greek fire (naptha) for use in fighting between wooden ships. The clay grenade was intended to break open and spill its contents, which would ignite on the enemy ship and catch it on fire.

“Spokes for the Wheel of Torment” by Buckethead

October 27, 2016 by Craig DiLouie Leave a Comment

“The Garden of Earthly Delights” (dated between 1490 and 1510) is a three-part painting by Dutch painter Hieronymus Bosch and his best-known work. An oil painting on oak, the work consists of a center panel and two outer panels. When the outer panels are folded, they depict Creation as described in the Bible. When opened, the left panel shows God presenting Eve to Adam. The central panel shows an earthly paradise (or a warning against too deeply tasting earthly delights, depending on the interpretation). The right panel shows Hell.

The images of Hell, based on Church doctrine at the time, are fantastic and disturbing.

Syd Garon created an animation of the Hell panel for “Spokes for the Wheel of Torment,” a song on a new Buckethead album. He writes on YouTube:

“So Buckethead has someone send me some mp3’s of his new album without any comment or album art. I am struck by the “Spokes” track and I *instantly* visualize animated Hieronymus Bosch in my head. I scan a few of his paintings in and make a 15 second test animation. A week or so later I drive to Buckethead’s secret headquarters and play him the test. He freaks out and takes me into his recording area, right there on the wall is a huge Hieronymus Bosch poster. Buckethead had been imagining the painting coming to life when he wrote the song. This was one of the most effortless things I have ever done, it felt like it was meant to be.”
