Behold The Campy Awesomeness That Is KUNG FURY

I appreciate irony, but I don’t have ironic tastes. I’m not the kind of guy who watches a movie because it’s so terrible it’s good. If it’s terrible, it’s terrible.

KUNG FURY is a short film based on exactly those type of 80s movies, but it’s not bad at all. In fact, it’s awesome. It’s not so much a satire or spoof as a riff, an homage, a hilarious and fun compilation of familiar tropes jam packed into ridiculousness awesomeness.

KUNG FURY tells the story of a gritty cop who is gifted with godlike kung fu powers. When Adolf Hitler travels through time to challenge him, Kung Fury must travel back to Nazi Germany to kill Kung Fuhrer, accompanied by a stalwart cast of comrades.

I reported on this back when it was a Kickstarter project. Glad to see they made the film. Can’t wait for KUNG FURY II.

WORLD OF TOMORROW

After reading about WORLD OF TOMORROW, a 16-minute short animated film, at QuietEarth.us, I checked it out. Unfortunately, it cost $5 to buy access, but based on the reviews, I had to check it out. I’m glad I did.

This fascinating short packs a lot of interesting ideas in a short time–time travel and cross-time communication, recording and retrieving memories, life extension via cloning and uploading consciousness, the perspective and loss from living a long time through clones (including losing one’s humanity bit by bit), difference in access to new technology based on personal wealth, and an “outernet” based on connected neural pathways.

The film starts in the near future, when Emily, a little girl, answers the video phone. Calling her is herself hundreds of years in the future–her consciousness implanted in a third-generation clone. Future Emily introduces Emily Prime to the strange world of the future, asks a favor, and offers advice.

A mentally stimulating and emotionally touching watch. Here’s the trailer:

In this short proof-of-concept film, a man witnesses fire rain down from the sun and destroy the world. In the aftermath, he goes to work but realizes something is missing. He dreams of a woman named Isabelle, whom he believes he once loved, and while he catches glimpses of her, he can never find her.

Meanwhile, the city–a futuristic Mexico City–keeps changing, average people begin to lose their minds believing their lives aren’t real, and the narrator begins to question whether his reality is true and whether he’s dreaming.

I’m not sure I understood everything that was intended in this artsy piece, but I enjoyed the ride. It’s beautiful to watch. Check it out:
