OCCUPIED Season 2

April 12, 2018 by Craig DiLouie Leave a Comment

occupied-s2

I was blown away by OCCUPIED (available on Netflix), a Norwegian TV series (created by bestselling author Jo Nesbø) about a Russian “silk glove” invasion of Norway. As a political, spy, and police thriller, it’s hands-down one of the best things I’ve seen on a small screen. Just finished the second season, which is as good as the first, with enough twists and ratcheting tension to satisfy any thriller fan, and with enough smarts to satisfy those who prefer TV written for thinking adults.

At the end of the first season, Jesper Berg, the prime minister, joins the resistance as open warfare erupts between the country and Russia. The second season opens with the prime minister in exile after eight months of guerilla warfare produced an uneasy cease fire. The new prime minister hates his no-win job and resigns, creating an opportunity for Berg to come back. His assistant Anita, however, makes a pitch to parliament for a new government that results in her becoming prime minister. Anita must now navigate Russian influence and maintain the peace, while Berg must keep the heat on and disrupt that peace to get the Russians out and him back in power.

The result is a powerful political thriller with realistic characters in realistic conflict, motivations and actions that are rarely morally clear, and extremely smart machinations and twists that keep you guessing and surprised. I loved it, and I’m hoping a third season gets made.

WAKING GODS by Sylvain Neuvel

April 11, 2018 by Craig DiLouie Leave a Comment

waking godsSylvain Neuvel’s WAKING GODS is a terrific sequel to SLEEPING GIANTS, his amazing novel about first alien-human contact. Here’s my review, though note it contains spoilers if you haven’t read the first book.

In SLEEPING GIANTS, the story unfolds as a series of interviews and journal entries compiled by a mysterious government agent who believes a giant metal hand discovered in an underground cavern is of alien origin. More, that it is part of a larger artifact. Recruiting various people, he builds a team that collects the parts of a giant robot, discovering the robot can be piloted–and is invincible.

In the sequel, the robot Themis is now under UN control. Then another robot suddenly materializes in London, followed by more. The earth is under threat.

Like SLEEPING GIANTS, WAKING GODS is extremely clever. While presented as an epistolary novel–a series of documents–it’s engaging, with great characters who really stand out and that you root for. There are tons of twists and turns, and only half of these are action and plot turns, while the rest are simple but smart reveals that rapidly propel the story in new directions. That’s the great joy of this series, that Neuevel put so much damn thought into every single thing that happens in these books. All is revealed, and the unraveling of the truth is a big part of the fun.

Recommended if you like smart science fiction.

BLACK PANTHERS: VANGUARD OF THE REVOLUTION (2015)

April 10, 2018 by Craig DiLouie Leave a Comment

black panthers

BLACK PANTHERS: VANGUARD OF THE REVOLUTION (2015) is the first documentary to take a deep look at one of the most influential Black political movements of the Twentieth Century–the Black Panther Party. The film is based on archival footage and interviews with 50 people, including former members, FBI informants, police officers, and others. Watching it, I was amazed at what they achieved, the opportunities they wasted, and the level of government oppression directed at them.

The Black Panther Party formed in California in response to de facto segregation and police brutality. Citing open carry laws, they began arming themselves and shadowing police officers and otherwise patrolling neighborhoods. In response, the State of California and then Governor Ronald Reagan passed legislation to make open carry illegal, with support of the NRA. When Black Panthers showed up in Sacramento during debate on the bill with weapons to make a point, many people were amazed at their audacity, and a national then international movement was born.

From the beginning, the Black Panthers held to a 10-point manifesto. They wanted economic opportunity, decent housing, education, jobs, freedom, a jury by their peers, the release of prisoners, exemption from the draft, and justice. They started child nutrition and other welfare programs in their communities. Their look–black leather jackets, sunglasses, berets, and a gun–influenced fashion, became a Black Power symbol, and helped drive the “Black is beautiful” movement. Despite the male urban guerilla image, the majority of members were women.

The party’s political activity quickly drew the attention of Herbert Hoover, the authoritarian director of the FBI, who focused COINTELPRO activities on destroying the party. Party leaders were subjected to constant harassment, arrest, surveillance, informants, and misinformation designed to create rifts in the leadership. While the open, head-on repression was brutal, it was the more subtle tactics such as sowing dissension that destroyed the party in the end, along with poor leadership in lack of direction. Some of Hoover’s paranoia was earned–the BPP constantly postured and openly called for armed revolution against the United States government. Hoover was particularly paranoid about a “black messiah” figure who would unite Blacks with liberal Whites and start a major political movement, which led to the police assassination of Fred Hampton. The FBI’s tactics were straight up police state stuff, brutal and un-Constitutional.

In the end, the viewer is left to decide if the party served its ideals or got sidetracked in posturing, but either way, it is certain that the Black Panther Party had a profound effect on a new political and cultural awakening for African-Americans in the ’60s.

I AM NOT YOUR NEGRO (2016)

April 9, 2018 by Craig DiLouie Leave a Comment

I-Am-Not-Your-Negro

I AM NOT YOUR NEGRO (2016) is a documentary based on an unfinished manuscript by James Baldwin, a Black novelist and social critic. Narrated by Samuel L. Jackson, the film depicts Baldwin’s observations about race in America from the 50s on and traces his relationship with the American civil rights movement, notably Medgar Evers, Malcom X, and Martin Luther King.

The documentary lacks historical depth and is more deeply personal, going into Baldwin’s head and what he thought. We’re given an ample look at his views going back to the 60s, including his infamous debate with William F. Buckley that brought the mostly White audience to a standing ovation. Baldwin’s observations are smart, cutting, and powerful.

As examples, he derides Bobby Kennedy’s observation that Blacks had made significant progress in America, and that in 40 years, might even make President. While White liberals saw this as uplifting statement, Baldwin naturally found it insulting, wondering if he should be thankful that in 40 years, if the Blacks were good, they might be elected to the highest office. In his views, Blacks and Whites needed each other, were both Americans with just as much right to participate in society, but that Blacks found themselves disenfranchised as if living in somebody else’s house. “Negroes built this country,” he says. Popular culture depicted Blacks as stereotypes, which he despised, feeling it denied his humanity, just the way social questions about “how to help the Negro” did and blind racist hatred did. Blacks needed a fair shake and to be regarded fairly and equally, as human beings, nothing more, but certainly nothing less.

These and many other issues are explored in the documentary, which I found more a social critique and personal intellectual narrative than historical film. While it lacks punch, its power is subtle, gnawing at you by making you think about race relations a new way, especially if you’re White.
