After seeing HELLRAISER many years ago, I never bothered to read the Clive Barker book on which the film is based, THE HELLBOUND HEART. I’m glad I did. The book blows the movie away. Reading it, I could see straight off why Barker is one of the greatest horror authors of our age. He writes beautifully, with an eerie eloquence, and his pacing is perfect. If you’re at all a fan of the film or even if you’re not, I recommend reading THE HELLBOUND HEART, a story about a man, obsessed with finding the ultimate experience of pleasure, who obtains a mysterious puzzle box that promises everything he ever wanted, unleashing the Cenobites, who have their own ideas about what constitutes pleasure.
