Present tense can be effective in apocalyptic/survival horror as it communicates tension and stimulates suspense. I am seeing a growing number of writers in the genre using it. It can also make people crazy, however, like this Amazon reviewer. Sometimes I think novels written in present tense should carry a warning label so nobody gets hurt.

I thought it was different, but I dint freak out over it. You remained consistent with it, and the story was too good for me to have that particular writing choice serve as a distraction.

Present tense is the most effective way of involving the reader in the story. I will occasionally use past tense, but very rarely, as I feel it’s disengaging.
