I recently caught JOHN DIES AT THE END on Netflix. The film, based on the highly successful novel by David Wong, tells the story of David and John, two twenty-somethings that become infected with a living drug that gives them the ability to transcend time and space, see inter-dimensional beings invading Earth, and fulfill a special destiny as protectors of this dimension. The movie is terrific. It’s fun, it’s punchy, it’s got a great pace that never flags, it’s indie but has great production values and decent acting. It’s also tighter in focus than the book–but even the movie is a little confusing as the timeline jumps around and it takes a while to realize there are multiple threats in the storyline, reflecting the novel’s episodic nature, which I understand was created from a serial.
Check it out and be delightfully surprised at how much fun you’ll have.
