Vox recently looked at the sorry state of political affairs in the United States and sees not merely a turbulent period but the inevitable result of the way our constitutional democracy is set up. Polarization was bound to happen, one contributor argues, leading to partisan brinkmanship that threatens constant Constitutional crisis.
One scenario is decision-making may get so gridlocked that the military has to step in and act as arbiter, a very scary thought put forward here.
Another is the Office of the President may continue to claim more and more powers to get things done, as argued here.
And another is that we’ll simply muddle through. It’ll be an ongoing train wreck, but unless Americans demand something better, it’ll stay that way, and things will get figured out somehow, as argued here.
Very interesting reading, and sensational stuff, but the core problem, and each of the possible scenarios, rings true.
