Another perfect movie from the ’70s: ROLLERBALL starring James Caan. What a great movie, Brave New World meets Gladiator. Somehow though I don’t think the corporate superstate is going to be as benevolent as it is in the film, asking for obedience in exchange for peace and plenty; the real corporate state will impoverish the majority and enrich a tiny elite while also requiring obedience.
Zombie Book: COMES THE DARK By Patrick D’Orazio
Just finished COMES THE DARK, a survival horror novel by Patrick D’Orazio. I had fun with it. It reminded me of David Moody’s AUTUMN in that the zombies are literally rotting off the page. The world is realistic, lived in, smashed to pieces and almost hopeless. With its basic survival plot and extreme gore and violence, it serves as excellent meat and potatoes zombie fiction for fans who like their read bloody.
Short Film: I LOVE SARAH JANE
Fantastic short film about Australia slowly falling to a zombie plague.
THE OMEGA MAN
Now THIS is more like it. More 1970s Charlton Heston apocalyptic goodness: OMEGA MAN, where we all die from germ warfare.
With A Bang, Not A Whimper
The end of the world comes with a bang courtesy of a really, really big asteroid. Great short, check it out.
SOYLENT GREEN
SOYLENT GREEN is just as good now as it was in 1973 and if you never seen it, boy are you in for an experience. Environmental collapse is my least favorite form of apocalypse (as a writer of apocalyptic fiction), probably because it’s the one that’s most likely to actually kill us all.
