In AFRAID by Jack Kilborn, a helicopter crashes near a small town in rural Wisconsin, dropping an elite team of psychopathic soldiers, trained in the art of red ops–terrorism–who systematically slaughter the town. Sometimes the survivors seem too effective at besting the soldiers, and the soldiers a little too indestructible, but AFRAID is great survival horror–tense, harrowing, gripping. I read it in a day.
