When it comes to climate change, I’m reminded of Easter Island. Jared Diamond has theorized that the people there destroyed their life-sustaining ecosystem because the elites on the island–the chief and his family–had short-term interests that conflicted with their society’s long-term interests. Of course, the short-term interests took priority. The elites were also in a better position to insulate themselves from the effects. In the end, everybody ended up suffering.
