I grew up with haunted house stories, and with a strong feeling of having been there, done that many times, I usually don’t go in for reading them. Then I picked up THE HAUNTED by Bentley Little and was once again amazed by the storytelling of the writer Stephen King calls “the horror poet laureate.”
When the Perry family decide to go house hunting, they discover an older home that seems perfect for them. Unfortunately, the house is already occupied by an ancient evil that feeds on fear and death.
Little does a great job heckling the family and gradually ramping up the tension and abuse until the climax. A good horror story presents the normal, introduces a horror element, and then we end up with the new normal. Little does a great job presenting a normal American family while producing an original haunting with numerous scares and surprises.
If you’re a fan of ghost stories and looking for something new in this heavily traveled part of the horror, check out Little’s take in THE HAUNTED.
