In THE DIVIDE, nuclear Armageddon destroys New York City, sending a group of panicked apartment dwellers into the basement, where the misanthropic super (the great Michael Biehn) lives and maintains an emergency bunker. The movie starts off with a bang as one of the characters sees nuclear fire rain down on the city, and the people in the building flood toward the exit in a bind panic. After that, unfortunately, things go downhill fast as the small band of survivors waste no time in petty squabbles, bizarre encounters with soldiers tunneling through the ground that are never explained, rapid devolution into a LORD OF THE FLIES-style society, and an unsatisfying ending. Overall it was worth a watch as I’m into the genre and the opening scenes are incredible, but ultimately it fell flat for me.
