An analysis of the reading habits of 20,000 male and 20,000 female Goodreads.com members in 2014 found that people preferred to read books written by authors of their own gender. Highlights:
* 90% of men’s 50 most-read titles in 2014 were written by men
* 90% of women’s 50 most-read titles in 2014 were written by women (and one of these “men” was JK Rowling writing as Robert Galbraith)
However, men and women enjoy books written by authors of the opposite sex, though both appear to slightly enjoy books by female authors more:
* Female readers rated books by female authors an average 4 out of 5 and books written by male authors 3.8 out of 5
* Male readers rated books by male authors 3.8 out of 5 and books written by female authors 3.9 out of 5
Note the results are based on Goodreads.com members, who are active readers, not necessarily reflective of the general population.
