From ZOMBIELAND to SHAUN OF THE DEAD, some of the best zombie movies are comedies. LIFE AFTER BETH (2014) is a fantastic indie addition to the genre.
In LIFE AFTER BETH, Zach is a wreck after his girlfriend Beth dies unexpectedly. After she rises from the dead, he takes it as a second chance to do and say everything he wished he had while they were together. But Beth’s mental state is deteriorating. She’s getting violent. Hungry. And she may not be the only one coming back.
The film is quirky, with a dry sense of humor, and hums along with good pacing, clever dialog and excellent performances by a cast including John C. Reilly, Aubrey Plaza, Molly Shannon, Cheryl Hines, Paul Reisser and others.
I enjoyed SHAUN OF THE DEAD for what it was, but also saw it as an allegory of a man-child who has to let go of the things holding him back before he can grow up and commit to a loving relationship. LIFE AFTER BETH similarly works as a straight up zombie story but also pushes a theme of finding closure and letting go at the end of a relationship.
