In CHERNOBYL DIARIES, a group of eco-tourists visit Prypiat, the city in Soviet Union abandoned after the Chernobyl nuclear accident in the 1980s, and find out they are being hunted. The film isn’t apocalyptic, but the setting is. What a bizarre experience it must be to visit that dead place. The truly horrific thing about Chernobyl is how close we came to Europe being rendered uninhabitable. The fight to contain the meltdown involved 500,000 workers, many of whom died, and presented such a huge cost it crippled the Soviet economy and contributed to the collapse of the USSR.
