CEMETERY DANCE Reviews OUR WAR

August 5, 2019 by Craig DiLouie Leave a Comment

CEMETERY DANCE recently reviewed OUR WAR, writing, “This may be one of the most important books you’ll read this year. I say that without an ounce of hyperbole. Given the current climate of our country and its cultural, political, and social polarization, Craig DiLouie has written a heart-breaking, terrifying novel which—I desperately hope—will only be a warning, and not someday viewed as prophetic.”

Thank you for your kind review, CEMETERY DANCE! Check out the complete review here.

Other reviews of OUR WAR:

“This gritty, horrifying tale of hate … sprinkled with moments of love, will leave readers with haunting memories.” – Publisher’s Weekly

“Presenting a dark alternate reality that touches the seams of current events and a possible future, DiLouie offers an uncompromising view of … patriotism in conflict.” – Library Journal

“Once again, DiLouie has managed to distill one of humanity’s greatest conflicts into a masterpiece of literature.” – The Fantasy Inn

“Harrowing dystopia.” – Kirkus Reviews, listing Our War as one of the best speculative fiction reads of August 2019

“An instant classic that will join the ranks of dystopian futures that at times feel all too real.” – New York Times Bestselling Author Nicholas Sansbury Smith

“An unflinching look at what happens when politics fail and war truly comes home, powered by the narrative shock of truth-telling.” – Christopher Brown, Campbell and World Fantasy Award-nominated author of Tropic of Kansas

“Part epic war story, part cautionary tale, Our War is brutal, unflinching, and mesmerizing. DiLouie once again delivers an emotional body-slam of a book, one that’ll leave you shaken to your core.” — Peter Clines, author of Dead Moon

“Our War further solidifies that Craig DiLouie is not only one of the best fantasists working today, he’s one of the best writers out there, period. This novel is harrowing and heartfelt, upsetting and, most of all, utterly compelling … far and away my favorite novel of 2019.” – Bracken MacLeod, Shirley Jackson Award-nominated author of Stranded

“A gut-clenching tale of brutality, loyalties, and the destruction of the values they are fighting to save… Mr. DiLouie has created an eye-opening tale with some wicked sharp edges.” – Tome Tender

The Fantasy Inn Reviews OUR WAR

July 23, 2019 by Craig DiLouie Leave a Comment

The Fantasy Inn recently reviewed OUR WAR, my novel about a second American civil war coming from Orbit August 20, 2019, writing, “Once again, DiLouie has managed to distill one of humanity’s greatest conflicts into a masterpiece of literature. Where classics like 1984 or Brave New World warned of dystopias set years in the future, it’s only too easy to envision a world like the one presented in Our War becoming reality in mere months.”

The Fantasy Inn added:

“DiLouie pulls no punches and his books force us to take a long hard look in the mirror to examine uncomfortable truths… [He] shows an uncanny knack for capturing what it means to be human. I came into this book expecting a particular political point of view to be favored. Instead, vastly different beliefs were portrayed with compassion and understanding. I fell in love with characters on all sides of the war, complex humans capable of both good and evil.”

Thank you for the kind review, Fantasy Inn!

OUR WAR Coming in 2019

November 30, 2018 by Craig DiLouie Leave a Comment

I’m very happy to announce that my next major release is coming from Orbit in August 2019. In this novel, a brother and sister become child soldiers fighting on opposite sides of a second American civil war. The novel is about their struggle and the lives of the people they come into contact with. It’s prescient and powerful. I hope you’ll check it out!

Here’s a description:

After his impeachment, the president of the United States refuses to leave office, and the country erupts into a fractured and violent war. Orphaned by the fighting and looking for a home, 10-year-old Hannah Miller joins a citizen militia in a besieged Indianapolis.

In the Free Women militia, Hannah finds a makeshift family. They’ll teach her how to survive. They’ll give her hope. And they’ll show her how to use a gun.

Hannah’s older brother, Alex, is a soldier too. But he’s loyal to other side, and has found his place in a militant group of fighters who see themselves as the last bastion of their America. By following their orders, Alex will soon make the ultimate decision behind the trigger.

On the battlefields of America, Hannah and Alex will risk everything for their country, but in the end they’ll fight for the only cause that truly matters — each other.

My Deal with Orbit for OUR WAR

May 29, 2018 by Craig DiLouie Leave a Comment

orbitOn July 18, Orbit will publish my dark fantasy novel, ONE OF US. Today, I’m very excited to announce Orbit will also publish my next novel, OUR WAR, in 2019.

The next American civil war isn’t between Red and Blue states or North against South. It is president versus Congress, Right versus Left, rural versus urban, nationalism versus globalization. Warring cultures and conflicting dreams.

On Ava Miller’s ninth birthday, President Marsh refuses to leave office following his impeachment. As the country slides toward war, her family flees to Indianapolis, which falls under siege. A year later, she becomes a child soldier in a citizen militia while her brother Alex is forced to fight for the other side.

Ava’s war changes all it touches. A UNICEF worker who must conquer her fears to do what’s right. A cynical reporter who takes a stand. A militia sergeant who comes to recognize humanity in those he hates. And Alex, who must make the ultimate choice behind the trigger.

Torn from today’s headlines, this powerful, prescient tale describes the horror of a second American civil war. A savage war, a war without winners. Our war.

Publishing about 60 titles each year, Orbit U.S. is the sci-fi/fantasy imprint at Hachette Book Group U.S.A., with authors including M.R. Carey, Joe Abercrombie and Iain M. Banks. Plans for OUR WAR are still preliminary, but the intent right now is to publish it in hardcover, likely in summer 2019, and then trade paperback. I’ve already seen the first cover design, and it’s a stunner.

Very exciting for me, it still feels like a dream. I’m very fortunate to be able to work with a quality company like Orbit.
