SUMMER OF THE APOCALYPSE by James Van Pelt is the story of a boy trying to find his father in the aftermath of the plague that destroys most of humanity, intertwined with the story of his journey as an old man trying to reach a university, whose books he believes will make mankind great again. Great writing and interesting concepts make this a solid apocalyptic read in the tradition of EARTH ABIDES.

In BELLFLOWER, filmed for just $17,000, two friends prepare for the apocalypse by building flamethrowers in their spare time. Then one falls in love, gets hurt, and the film descends into a tit for tat game of violent revenge that feels almost Shakespearean as the Mad Max fantasy becomes a bloody vengeance fantasy. The characters are compelling and the film has a unique feel, but the story might fall flat for some.
At the Permuted Press panel at zomBcon, Iain McKinnon–I am pretty sure it was Iain–made an interesting observation. He said during an extreme crisis 10 percent of people will do the right thing to help others, 10 percent will do the absolute worst thing, and the rest will look for somebody to tell them what to do. What do you think?
In THE DAY, humanity is engaged in open war against some type of enemy. The story focuses on five survivors, lost and on the run, pursued by a relentless enemy, over a 24-hour period. Trailer follows.
In Argentinian film PHASE 7, Coco and his pregnant wife Pipi enter bewildered denial when a flu pandemic results in the quarantine of their building. As resources dwindle and society collapses, the neighbors turn on each other while Coco is mentored by the survivalist who lives down the hall. Not quite comedy, not quite serious, it achieves a certain charm, and I enjoyed Coco’s reluctant progression from nice guy to apocalyptic warrior.
My new apocalyptic horror novel, THE KILLING FLOOR, is coming soon in early 2012 from Permuted Press. The sequel to THE INFECTION, THE KILLING FLOOR continues this popular story about people fighting to survive against impossible odds. Check out the book trailer below, then click here to learn more.
Special thanks to Dan Hadash, Cameron Gillies, Jennifer Lau and Christine Gillies for their help putting it together!
Finally caught THE LOST FUTURE, a SyFy movie about an isolated tribe of humans trying to stay alive against the infected who caused the downfall of civilization many generations ago. Despite interesting settings and some spirited attempts at delivering a pulp story, I could not get behind any of the characters, nor did I feel invested in their quest to save their tribe. Check it out, though, maybe you will like it.
