In THE DAY THE EARTH CAUGHT FIRE, a great classic film, nuclear testing that changes the axis of the earth, creating a global heat wave that threatens all life on the planet. The story centers on a washed up British reporter, who unravels the government coverup. The USA and USSR detonate more devices in the hopes that they will correct the deviation. The special effects are very good for the time. In one version of the film, the viewer is left with uncertainty as to whether they succeeded.
A man wanders the zombie wasteland, fighting to escape, while a woman searches for candy. They connect briefly, making them feel normal, if only for a fleeting moment. I loved the atmosphere the filmmakers created, particularly the zombie moans.
I was happily surprised today to receive my advance autographed copy of THEM OR US from its author, David Moody. Thank you, David! Can’t wait to dig into it.
If you’re not familiar with Moody’s HATER series, you should be! The first book, HATER, contains one of the most compelling twists in horror literature that I have ever read. Its sequel, DOG BLOOD, continues the story of the main character, Danny McCoyne, trying to find his daughter in a world defined by catastrophic war between two branches of humanity. THEM OR US is the climax of the series.
Here’s the synopsis of the final book:
“The war that has torn the human race apart is finally nearing its end. With most towns and cities now uninhabitable, and with the country in the grip of a savage nuclear winter, both Hater and Unchanged alike struggle to survive.
“Hundreds of Hater fighters have settled on the East Coast in the abandoned remains of a relatively undamaged town under the command of Hinchcliffe—who’ll stop at nothing to eradicate the last few Unchanged and consolidate his position at the top of this new world order. This fledgling society is harsh and unforgiving—your place in the ranks is decided by how long and how hard you’re prepared to fight.
“Danny McCoyne is the exception to the rule. His ability to hold the Hate and to use it to hunt out the remaining Unchanged has given him a unique position in Hinchcliffe’s army of fighters. As the enemy’s numbers reduce, so the pressure on McCoyne increases, until he finds himself at the very center of a pivotal confrontation, the outcome of which will have repercussions on the future of everyone who is left alive.”

MTV has a new original series debuting tonight mixing humor and horror–DEATH VALLEY, sort of like COPS, but instead of dealing with drunken idiots with their shirts off, the cops in the show have to put down vampires, werewolves and zombies that started appearing in the San Fernando Valley a year ago.

Amazon.com identifies the most frequently highlighted passages in its Kindle books. Here are the most popular in THE INFECTION.
“In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is not king. He is not king because nobody recognizes him as king. The others do not even know he is there.”
“We try to live with as little pain and as much pleasure as possible. But pain makes us realize we are alive. We truly live one moment to the next when we live with pain. When pain stops, we become afraid. And we remember things we do not wish to remember that are themselves painful.”
“How would you solve for x? Answer: You try to kill it.”
“There is no honor in survival, but life goes on and life is everything. Nothing else matters. And anybody who thinks differently is a fool—a fool who probably won’t live very long.”
“Living your life like a defective CD eternally skipping during your favorite song is not living.”
“The funny thing about the story of Job is that Job never questioned Satan. In Hebrew, Satan has two meanings. One is the Adversary. The other is ha-Satan, the Accuser. In either case, he is an Angel of the Lord. Maybe Job did not question Satan because he did not have to do so. If God is everything, he is also Satan. The Adversary. The Accuser. Creator of Heaven and Earth.”
“‘There is a path to the top of even the highest mountain,’ he exclaimed, quoting an Afghan proverb.”
“I wonder how much time we spend each day doing things and not actually knowing we’re alive.”
“The Infected. They’re pretty much the living dead. But us? We’re the dead living.”
“What was it the preacher was always saying? The earth abides. The earth, in other words, does not give a shit.”
The ash blankets the treetops and drifts in the air, obscuring everything green and creating a virtual twilight. Anne closes her eyes for a moment, and when she opens them, she sees the eyes glimmering in the haze. Dozens of staring red eyes burning in the gloom, the dark spaces of the forest. She takes another step forward.
In DAYS OF DARKNESS, a comet passes by the earth, depositing an alien organism that turns people into zombies with the exception of a few who seek refuge from the hordes. A small group of survivors hole up together, fighting among themselves and the infected outside.
